If you own the S&W SD9VE pistol, you may have noticed that it is a little difficult to find a holster that fits it properly. Despite it having a low weight and an average size and barrel length, many popular holsters point out that they won’t fit the SD9VE.
We’ve done some research for you, and we’ve put together this review of the best Smith and Wesson SD9VE holsters on the market. We’ll pick out what we think is the best option for most gunowners at the end of this article.
With a combination of a stainless steel barrel and polymer frame, the S&W SD9VE is already prepared for withstanding self defense and tactical situations. You’ll need a holster for your S&W that enhances these features but also keeps it in place and secure during daily activities, while still being able to fit standard accessories like SD9VE sights.
Materials – The UTG Deluxe Commando Belt Holster is a conveniently sized outside of the waistband holster that is mainly constructed of durable polyester. The main pocket of the OWB holster is shaped to provide a firm barrier between your S&W SD9VE and regular exterior elements that could cause damage. There is a single, buckled clip to provide some retention, and it quickly snaps open when you need to draw your firearm. It’s adjustable to fit multiple types of small caliber pistols. There is also a small, attached pocket with a Velcro closure to hold an additional magazine round. A Velcro belt loop attaches the UTG Deluxe Commando Belt Holster to the outside area of the waistband, which is adjustable.
Performance – UTG designed the Commando Belt Holster as a simple solution to someone who wants to carry their Smith and Wesson SD9VE around during daily activities. The polyester and Velcro design is just enough of what the average gunowner needs without going over the top. With that in mind, it is obviously not for any tactical or more professional uses. Keep your SD9VE pistol comfortable and your side while you’re at the range or going for a long car ride. The buckle clip will keep your firearm safely in place throughout the day, and it can be easily manipulated for the occasional instances you may need to draw.
What we say – If you didn’t plan on dropping a lot of cash the UTG might be a good choice. It’s in the lower price range and the cheapest option on our list. Stay comfortable and low profile with this no hassle belt holster.
- Cheapest cost
- Best for low expectation carry situations
- Velcro belt loop adjustable
- Not best for fast drawing situations
- Won’t protect pistol against tactical damage
- TACTICAL GEAR, HOLSTERS, MAGAZINE POUCHES
Materials – The Serpa Sportster made by Blackhawk is another outside of waistband holster for your Smith and Wesson SD9VE pistol, but it is graduated to the next level of protection. The all polymer construction will keep your firearm protected in tactical situations or more strenuous daily activities. There is a passive retention detent adjustment screw, so you can decide how firmly you want to keep your weapon in place. It also offers an automatic lock release button, so a simple press will allow you to draw your pistol. Upon reholstering, you can hear an audible click to let you know your SD9VE has been retained.
Performance – This holster definitely takes things up to the next level. Similar to the styles of OWB holsters you see worn in the police force or military, you can expect a higher level of protection for your S&W SD9VE. The polymer body is tough and durable, which means your firearm won’t rock back and forth during movement. This is also enforced by the automatic lock and release button, which is a feature we’ve always loved from Blackhawk. The additional retention screw is one more feature that will bring your carrying to the next level. The only downside is that with these extra retention features and tougher housing material, it won’t be as comfortable to wear throughout the day. As a regular citizen, you may find yourself getting uncomfortable with a wide polymer holster.
What we say – The Blackhawk Serpa Sportster is still very affordable and offers great value assuming it’s the kind of holster you are looking for. If you require multiple points of retention in an OWB holster, then this is the best SD9VE holster for you.
- Tough polymer construction
- Retention screw and lock and release button
- Audible click upon reholstering
- Can be uncomfortable for day-long wear
- SERPA Auto Lock release
- Passive retention detent adjustment screw
- Gunmetal gray holster body with black locking mechanism
Materials – If concealed carry is your style, then an inside of the waistband SD9VE holster is for you. The Concealment Express IWB Kydex Adjustable Carry Holster has been made specifically for S&W SD9VE models after popular demand. The holster is made of official Kydex material, and it is custom molded to your firearm. There is a single retention screw under the trigger guard, which has the Posi-Click feature when it’s being used. Although it’s an inside the waistband, this Conealment Express holster has a fifteen degrees cant adjustment, so it can be worn vertically or in FBI style. It can be purchased for left or right handed shooters, and it comes in either black or carbon fiber black.
Performance – For inside of waistband holsters, the option Concealment Express offers is pretty much the best SD9VE holster you can find online. Kydex is one of the most popular types of materials used for holsters because it is highly protective, can withstand heat and moisture, and can be tightly molded to the shape of whatever pistol you need it for. It’s low profile, low weight, and great at housing your firearm for long wear. The adjustable single clip is also a big plus, since we love anything with versatility. The only downside to this IWB holster is that it can be more difficult to draw your SD9VE, as there isn’t any material inside to aid in that.
What we say – The IWB holster made by Concealment Express is slightly more expensive than our first to options but still nothing that breaks the bank. This is the best SD9VE Holster for anyone who wants a discrete concealed carry.
- Molded Kydex is durable and low profile
- Retention screw with Posi-Click
- Can adjust cant
- More difficult for a smooth draw

Materials – The DeSantis Speed Scabbard Holster is a beautifully crafted, leather, OWB holster that is said to fit the S&W SD9VE “like a glove”. The all leather design is molded to the shape of your pistol, and there is reinforced stitching at the belt slots, so you shouldn’t experience fraying or worn out leather. There is also a single retention screw at the trigger guard. While there is no thumb break, the Speed Scabbard Holster sits higher and fits tightly, so the wearer can move about freely and draw quickly when needed. It comes in either black or tan for right handed shooters.
Performance – The last option on our list is a gorgeous looking outside of the waistband holster that (if it matters to you) greatly compliments a shooter’s appearance. We particularly like the reinforced stitching at the belt slots, as we don’t see that on many OWB holsters. Since it attaches at two points on the belt, your S&W SD9VE won’t sag or swing during movement, and your grip will be at a high point on the hip for easy access. The leather material will provide a smooth draw and reholstering. While it’s not considered low profile, the specially designed molding keeps your pistol close to the body, and it won’t snag on any exterior elements.
What we say – You might have guessed it already, the DeSantis is the most expensive holster on our list. That being said, considering that it’s made from leather and will last you quite a while it’s not expensive at all. If you like the feeling of leather and you want something a little more fancy, the DeSantis is an awesome option.
- Beautiful leather design
- Retention screw and reinforced stitching
- Sits high and tight
- Most expensive option
Our Favorite Smith and Wesson SD9VE Holster
We think the best holster for a Smith and Wesson SD9VE pistol is the Concealment Express IWB Holster. For most everyday civilians, we think an inside of the waistband holster is likely preferred, since we usually don’t want to announce to the public that we have a weapon on our persons. This is one of the best IWB holsters because of the Kydex material, which will seriously stand up to anything. Whether it’s a hot day, or you have just been wearing your S&W SD9VE holster for a long amount of time, the Kydex will be resistant against sweat and dirt that can build up. It is also the only option that allows the wearer to adjust the cant. Whether you have a preference, or you want to experiment and find which position is best suited for you, the ability to change the cant is a great feature. At a really fair price, we highly suggest the Concealment Express for anyone with a S&WSD9 VE firearm.
