Whether you’re hunting, competing, or firing on a range, where are you storing your additional rounds? It’s really not ideal to keep your shotgun shells in a shirt or pant pocket, and fumbling around in a bag of loose ammo can really waste your time. So, what about storing your shotgun ammo on a belt? We’ve put together this review of the best shotgun shell belts for the money, and we’ll let you know what our favorite one is at the end.
There are many shotgun shell belts (and slings) on the market that have the basic, elastic loops for holding shells. While these are okay, they come with flaws. It’s easy for shells to slip out on their own, but it’s even easier for something to catch on the elastic and pull the loops open. The four option we’ve chosen don’t utilize elastic loops at all, but the materials used are still expandable and functional without giving the opportunity for slipping cartridges. Whether you’re looking for adjustability and comfort, or high quality and eye-catching appearance, we’ve got you covered in this article.
Materials – This belt for your shotgun shells is made of a nylon belt, which is adjustable up to fifty eight inches, and has an elastic neoprene covering. The belt secures with your basic, plastic buckle clip. The neoprene sleeve has twenty five slots, made of the same material, for your shotgun cartridges. There are two patterns available: a brown, woodland tree pattern or a green, mossy oak blades pattern. The side of the neoprene sleeve that lays against the body is lined with a softer material, so it’s comfortable to wear throughout the day. The pattern and materials used are ideal for hunting or maintaining your camouflaged appearance.
Performance – Out of all the choices within this review, the Allen Company belt is probably the best shotgun shell belt for those who need a lot of adjustability in size. The neoprene fabric should expand well or return to its regular shape as needed. Plus, this fabric is intended to resist water damage. Of course, the adjustable nylon belt is helpful here too. Since the shotgun shell slots are made of the same fabric, it’s easy to pull out a round or slide them into place. We may suggest not wearing this on a particularly hot day, or keep a cotton shirt between your body and the belt. The lining that is sewn in won’t be exactly sweat resistant.
What we say – This Allen Company Camo Shotgun Shell Belt is the best choice for hunters, easily. You can bend, crouch, or stand for hours with the expandable and comfortable belt.
- Good camouflage patterns
- Stretchy neoprene expands and holds shells securely
- Comfortable to wear all day
- Lining won’t be sweat resistant
- Holds 25 3.5" shotgun shells
- Adjustable up to 58"
- Realtree MAX-4 camo
Materials – This is one of two options made by Tourbon within this review. This is a 600D polyester belt. It has an adjustable nylon strap with the same plastic buckle clip. The polyester shell holder has twenty four slots for shotgun shells, and it has reinforced lining along the top and bottom edges along the belt. Also included on this option are two small pockets – one on either side of the belt – and a zippered pocket that runs the length of the entire belt. The polyester is not lined on the inside wall, but extra stitching and soft material make for a comfortable fit all day long.
Performance – This style of belt by Tourbon was definitely designed to perform. The polyester is very durable and will last against weather and temperature conditions, as well as resist tearing or damage. This is also the only option that features pockets! The side pockets are perfect for small gadgets; perhaps you need some tooling, screws, or something else. The pocket that runs the length of the belt is a little quirky, but you could keep papers, keys, or something very thin inside. While the belt is adjustable for size, the polyester isn’t going to expand or adjust with the belt by much. Altogether, though, this choice is very aesthetically pleasing.
What we say – This is the best shotgun shell belt for someone who likes a more sophisticated looking piece and could really use the additional storage in the pockets.
- Durable polyester
- Three extra pockets
- Well reinforced all over
- Polyester won’t adapt to size much
- Tourbon shotgun bandolier made from top quality 600D Polyester
- Quick release buckle
- Fit in waist vary from 89 to 110 cm
Materials – Guide Gear’s 12 Gauge Shotgun Cartridge Belt is constructed from genuine, top-grain leather in a tan brown color. There are eighteen leather loops available for holding shotgun shells. The exterior of the belt is a finished, protective, firm leather, while the interior side is a soft leather for comfortable wearing. This belt’s buckle is a standard metal buckle that you would find on a regular belt. All of the stitching is done with wax-lined threading. You’ll find reinforced stitching across the interior of the belt, at each seam of the shotgun shell loops, as well as across a raised edge installed under the shell loops for additional support to your ammo.
Performance – This is a very classic looking leather shotgun shell belt produced by Guide Gear. The leather itself is actually a very good quality leather, and all the extra stitching makes this a very durable belt that you can wear over and over again. What we really like, though, is the strip of leather that sits under the shotgun shell loops. This way, the shells won’t fall out. That’s not something you’ll often see on other shotgun shell belts. Other than that, this isn’t much different from a regular, leather belt. It’s definitely a little heavier than the others, so make sure you secure it tightly to your waist.
What we say – This leather shotgun shell belt from Guide Gear is definitely one of the best options for anyone looking for a very classic look. However, the material is great quality, so it’s not just for looks!
- Made with genuine top-grain leather
- Wax-lined stitching
- Extra support under shell loops
- A little heavy to wear
Materials – This final option by Tourbon is a genuine leather belt with a canvas sleeve for the shotgun shells. The belt is fashioned like a standard belt with a brass buckle, and it fits into slots in the back of the canvas sleeve. There are twenty five slots for the shotgun shells, which have reinforced stitching at the top of each one and reinforced leather bottoms on each one as well. There is additional stitching lining the top of the belt across the whole length. Buyers can choose between a taupe canvas color or an olive green canvas color.
Performance – Both options made by Tourbon are high quality and built to withstand some damage. This 20/12 GA cartridge belt is their even heavier-duty option while maintaining that same sophisticated style as the other one. However, we are fans of the reinforced bottoms of the shotgun shell slots on this one. While this choice also features a genuine leather belt, it’s more similar to what you would buy in a department store. This isn’t a bad thing, of course, but the leather is on the thinner side and may need to be tightened a little more than normal to hold up the weight of a fully stocked shotgun shell belt. It’s very comfortable to wear and is very nice to look at, certainly.
What we say – This is the best option for those who like leather belts but don’t want their waist to scream, “hey, look at all this leather!” – if you get what we’re saying. It’s comfortable and durable.
- Genuine leather belt
- Durable canvas
- Reinforced shotgun shell slots
- Thinner belt may not hold up weight
- Material: Canvas and leather
- Capacity: holds 25 shells for 12gauge
- Adjustable belt with brass finish buckle
Our Favorite Shotgun Shell Belt
To be perfectly honest, it was really difficult to choose our favorite shotgun shell belt for this review. These were all very good options, and each had a unique feature to put them on a level of high quality. We finally decided on the Tourbon 24 Round 12 Gauge Shotgun Shell Belt as our favorite. The 600D polyester material will be easy to clean, and the thickness will resist tears if you ever bump up against something. This also means your shotgun shell loops won’t wear out after sliding cartridges in and out over time. Of course, the pockets are also a great feature to this belt as well. If you have a belt for holding shotgun shells, why wouldn’t you use every inch of additional storage? The pockets may not be large, but they will certainly be useful. The muted colors and overall style of the belt are very appealing, and won’t necessarily make your row of cartridges the center of attention. The Tourbon 24 Round 12 Gauge Shotgun Shell Belt is definitely a choice that we think everyone should look into purchasing.
