If you happen to own multiple scopes that you like to switch out on a particular firearm, or you just like the convenience of a quick rifle breakdown, you’re going to want to look into a QD scope mount. We’ve put together a review of the best quick release scope mounts for the money, and we’ll let you know at the end which one we think will see you through the most years of use.
We’ve included two pairs of QD scope rings and two options for single piece mounts in this review. While we personally prefer single piece mounts for this purpose, a high quality pair of optic rings will still be functional and reliable to use on your firearm. Each option offers a unique aspect that should appeal to our readers, so you can’t go wrong with any choice!
Materials – This pair of QD scope mount rings from UTG is machined from aircraft grade aluminum alloy with an anodized, matte black finish. This option is a high profile set. They can fit or be adjusted to any Picatinny rail with the quick release levers. There are four points of retention on each scope ring total, with two on each side. A small space is open on the top of each ring to provide a better distribution of pressure over your scope. Inside the rings are a light adhesive to keep your optic steady during shooting, as opposed to a textured inside that would scratch or dent your accessory.
Performance – There’s nothing too wild or out of the box about this pair of quick detach scope rings. UTG makes very reliable accessories and mounts, and it’s a brand you can trust to deliver good quality products. These rings will keep your scope well in place, despite the quick detach levers. We personally like the adhesive that is within the rings, although we know some are skeptical about a sticky residue being left on their expensive gear. We say that this is nothing to worry about, and the adhesive really doesn’t leave behind a mess. We believe that for a more open concept style ring, there should really be six points of retention on each scope mount, but these are still very high quality QD rings.
What we say – These are the best quick release scope rings for those who can’t spend a ton of money on their mount, but also for those who like the slotted style of ring better, instead of a solid one.
- Cheapest option in review
- Adhesive within the rings
- High profile
- Could use more retention

Materials – The Burris AR PEPR quick release scope mount is a single piece construction made of a rugged and durable aluminum in an all black, matte, anodized finish. The single piece offers up to a two inch forward positioning for your scope. The dual rings feature a total of twelve retention points – six per ring. The interiors of the rings are smooth and without adhesive. The buyer has the option to choose between smooth topped scope rings, or they can have additional Picatinny rails atop their rings. Below the rings is plenty of viewing space, as this is a medium profile QD scope mount piece.
Performance – We personally like single piece constructed scope mounts, and we think this makes more sense for someone who is looking to purchase the best quick disconnect scope mount on the market. If you need QD, it would be more convenient to remove one entire piece instead of two, correct? There’s a lot of retention going on here to make up for the forward extension, so you should feel comfortable with your heavy duty 30mm scopes in this mount. Although they can be useful, the additional Picatinny rails on top of the rings is a little unnecessary, as you won’t want to add much more on top of your firearm. However, everything about this mount functions very well.
What we say – This QD scope mount is one of the best choices for someone who not only is looking for a single piece construction but is also looking for a little versatility in their setup – that is, if you want to utilize the Picatinny rails on top of the rings.
- Single piece construction
- Six points of retention per ring
- Discrete, matte black finish
- Extra Picatinny mounts a little unecessary
- Covered under warranty for life
- Made using the highest quality materials
- Tested for complete quality and reliability
Materials – This is the second set of individual quick release scope rings, manufactured by Warne Scope Mounts. These rings are made from strong steel, which have a matte black, anodized finish. They each feature a quick detach lever, as well as a unique stainless steel beam beneath the rings for stability on your Weaver rail. Each ring features two retention points, which are integrated at the top of the rings, as opposed to the more traditionally seen side. This style is unique to the Warne brand. The rings are a medium profile, and they accommodate 30mm scopes.
Performance – Warne puts out a unique line of QD scope rings, which some will like and some won’t. Their retention points, which sit at the top of the rings, have their upsides and downsides. The cool part about this factor is that it’s more convenient to access the tops of the rings and adjust your retention or realign your scope, as opposed to having to fumble with one side or both sides of a scope ring to make adjustments. The down side is that there’s less overall retention. Depending on the firearm you’re utilizing, this may or may not be a deal breaker. Obviously, these will be the best quick release scope rings for hunting rifles and not your AR 15s – haha!
What we say – These scope rings by Warne are sleek in appearance and can increase the convenience of adjusting your retention. The steel construction makes this a great deal as well.
- Constructed of steel
- Convenient to adjust retention at top
- Stainless steel beam underneath
- Less retention than most rings
Materials – The QR scope mount by American Defense Manufacturing is another single piece construction option. The quick release levers are longer than most, and they have a grooved pattern to avoid thumbs slipping. There’s a forward extension to your scope of two inches. The adjustment screws only require a flathead screwdriver, and opposed to a hex driver. Both scope rings feature three points of retention, which are uniquely place at the top of the rings. The sides of the scope rings have an open design, to distribute pressure and friction evenly during shooting. This scope mount is low profile, as there’s no space for viewing through the mount.
Performance – This quick detach scope mount by American Defense is certainly rugged, and it will be a better choice if you’re looking to mount a scope on your rifles and shotguns with strong recoils. We’re big fans of the quick detach levers themselves; they’re easier to grab and maneuver than a lot of others simply because they’re longer and have thumb grooves on them. They won’t get in the way, either. With six retention points, and the open design, you’re getting a higher level of stability for you scope. You won’t have to constantly re-zero on your target or be concerned about scratches or dents to your optic. The product page suggests using your finger to adjust the flat head screws, but we would advise against that. Either carry a screwdriver with you, or use a coin or another flat piece of metal. Your fingers won’t tighten any screws enough to get the job done.
What we say – The American Defense Riflescope Mount is one of the best QD scope mounts for those mounting an optic to a firearm with high recoil. Plus, this is one of the more convenient quick detach options, as far as the levers go.
- Single piece construction
- Twelve total points of retention
- Long levers are convenient
- Suggests using fingers to adjust screws – don’t do this.
- Does not require proprietary tools for adjustment
- Can be adjusted with your finger or a flat blade screwdriver
- Lever can be configured to lock to the front or the rear
Our Favorite Quick Release Scope Mount
This one was a no-brainer – our favorite quick release scope mount was the last option within this review: the American Defense AD-RECON Riflescope Optic Mount. For one, we’ve chosen a single piece mount over a pair of rings specifically because this is a review for quick detach mounts. While QD scope rings are convenient in their own right, we find it to be much more functional to remove your scope in its mount as one solid piece instead of two. There’s simply less of a chance for your optic to get damaged. Just as well, this maneuver will go more smoothly, which is very important in tactical uses. This scope mount by American Defense is very rugged and dependable in its design. The rings provide a great hold on your scope, and everything stays well in place on your rail while shooting. It’s a little more expensive than most, but we think everyone should consider this option for their QD needs.
