The Mossberg 500 is an incredibly popular shotgun. It’s a common choice amongst gunowners, and it’s easy to use. Whether for self defense purposes or hunting, a Mossberg 500 will see you through. For anyone who likes to fire off more than the average amount of rounds, a hot barrel can cause a lot of issues. We’ve put together this review of the best Mossberg 500 heat shields available on the market, and we’ll let you know which was out favorite to test out at the end.
While we normally feature products you can purchase on Amazon, heat shields aren’t available there, so we had to select choices from Brownell’s. The other thing to mention is that there isn’t a huge market of Mossberg 500 heat shields to select from. The good thing about this is that basically any heat shield you buy is going to do its job: protect you from burning yourself on a hot barrel. The tricky part is deciphering between the best features for the best value. Thankfully, we’ve done that hard work for you. Happy shopping and happy shooting!
Advanced Technology Heat Shield
Materials – The Advanced Technology Heat Shield is made from steel in a black oxide, matte finish. It’s just a quarter of an inch under fourteen inches long, and it was built to fit the Mossberg 500, as well as a Maverick 88, Remington 870, and Winchester 1200/1300 pump shotguns. The heat shield is easy to install and won’t require any modifications to your Mossberg 500. Simply slide the shield over the barrel, and secure it with the tooling that is provided by Advanced Technology. Featured within the heat shield is a system of elongated cooling slots to avoid burning your hands. The matte finish on the surface provides a gripping texture to eliminate slips of the hand.
Performance – This first option within our review is a pretty decent heat shield that should fit pretty much everyone’s needs. It’s nice that the tooling is provided by Advanced Technology for the installation, and you’ll be surprised to see that not all brands do that. This is a sturdy piece of construction, and the matte black finish will maintain a low profile appearance on your Mossberg 500 or any other shotgun you decide to install it on. The cooling slots are a little more oval shaped than round. While this doesn’t make any significant difference, really, we do like the elongated slots better than circular ones. They seem to dispel more heat that way. You’ll probably have to purchase a space to avoid slippage while shooting, but that is expected from most heat shields. This is a run-of-the-mill heat shield that covers your average needs.
What we say – The Advanced Technology Heat Shield costs about $25 online, making it the cheapest option within this review. This is the best Mossberg 500 heat shield for anyone with a tight budget or anyone who isn’t looking for anything over the top.
- Lowest cost
- Elongated cooling slots
- Easy to install
- Require spacer
Advanced Technology Heat Shield with Ghost Ring Sight
Materials – The Advanced Technology Heat Shield with Ghost Ring Sight is made of steel with a matte, black finish. It’s approximately thirteen inches long in length. It is advertised as fitting most 12, 16, and 20 gauge shotguns and .410 pump guns, including your Mossberg 500. This heat shield mist be custom fit to each shotgun, so it is strongly advised you seek out professional help unless you are thoroughly confident in your modification skills. There are elongated cooling slots and a textured grip to avoid slipping. The main feature of this Advanced Technology Heat Shield is the rear ghost ring sight. It has a 3mm I.D. aperture, which aids in fast target acquisition.
Performance – In most ways, the Advanced Technology Heat Shield with Ghost Ring Sight is fairly similar to the previous option, since they’re made by the same company, but there are a few key differences. Obviously, there is the rear sight. We have no complaint about the sight, and it’s perfectly good and functional, if that’s something you’re interested in. The heat shield is about ¾” shorter than the previous option, but the cooling slots and finish are the same. The big deal here is that you will probably want to have a gunsmith properly install this product. At the end of the day, that’s more money out of your pocket, but this is far from the most expensive option within this review. It may be universal, but it will have to be custom fit to your Mossberg 500.
What we say – The Advanced Technology Heat Shield with Ghost Ring Sight costs a little under $30 online, so it’s still a very affordable option. Despite having to have a gunsmith install this heat shield, you’re getting extra features for your money.
- Affordable cost
- Rear ghost ring sight
- Elongated cooling slots
- Requires custom fit installation
TacStar Shotgun Barrel Shroud
Materials – The TacStar Shotgun Barrel Shroud is constructed of steel in a blue, matte finish. It is about fourteen inches in length, and is described to fit universally on non-ribbed 12 gauge shotguns. The installation is incredibly easy, involving a simple clamp. There is also a friction collar to reduce any sliding during recoil. The heat shield has stamped holes throughout for heat dissipation from your shotgun’s barrel and to avoid burns to the hands. Instructions are provided with the TacStar Shotgun Barrel Shroud, and no additional tooling should be required.
Performance – The TacStar Shotgun Barrel Shroud is a slightly different option in style from what we’ve been seeing. This is the most simplistic design, and it’s possibly the easiest heat shield to install. The clamping installation is a simple 1, 2 procedure, and it has special friction barriers in place to avoid slipping on the barrel during recoil. This is the only product we’ve seen with this feature, and you shouldn’t have to purchase a spacer for your shotgun. This one is also the longest heat shield, so it covers more of your barrel and has a better distribution of weight and friction. The cooling holes on this heat shield are round, as opposed to oval shaped. While we mentioned before that we prefer the elongated slots, this isn’t really a big deal and by no means does it decrease the value of the TacStar Shotgun Barrel Shroud.
What we say – The TacStar Shotgun Barrel Shroud costs about $35 online. This is the best Mossberg 500 heat shield for anyone who needs any easy installation and is interested in better ways to eliminate your shield from sliding down your barrel. It may cost slightly more than other options, but you’re saving on cost by eliminating the need for spacers or additional tools.
- Easy clamping installation
- Covers more barrel surface
- Friction collar reduces sliding
- More expensive for universal design
Mossberg Barrel Heat Shield Kit
Materials – The Mossberg Barrel Heat Shield Kit is made of steel with a matte, black finish that has been parkerized. For installation, this heat shield is attached with a clamp and set of screws. It is easy enough for anyone to do at home without the aid of a gunsmith. A hex wrench is provided in this kit, so no additional tooling should be required. There are stamped holes throughout the heat shield for heat dissipation from the barrel and protecting hands from burns. Since this heat shield is produced by Mossberg, it is designed specifically to fit the Mossberg 500 and 590. It may, however, also be able to fit some other popular 12 gauge shotguns. It will require a spacer to be installed to avoid shifting during recoil.
Performance – The Mossberg Barrel Heat Shield Kit is the only option within this review that has been specifically designed for your Mossberg 500. Although there are many universal choices that should easily fit a 500, you can get some peace of mind by purchasing straight from the Mossberg company. We chose the kit over other options with the heat shield only simply because it’s more convenient to have everything you need in one purchase. The parkerized finish is a little nicer than most finishes you’ll see, especially on a heat shield. You can expect a lot of durability and many years of use out of this option. We advise, however, that you don’t attempt to attach this to other shotguns you own. If you really want to, then contact Mossberg to see if this model will fit your other 12 gauges.
What we say – The Mossberg Barrel Heat Shield Kit will cost you about $50, making it the most expensive option within this review. You may be paying more, but the price tag comes with an ensured fit to your shotgun and a stronger construction.
- Parkerized steel
- Made for Mossberg 500
- Comes with hex wrench
- Most expensive option
Our Top Pick
Our top pick for the best Mossberg 500 goes to the TacStar Shotgun Barrel Shroud. While it may seem like the best choice is the heat shield kit from Mossberg itself, it honestly isn’t the best design and function available. A universally fitting heat shield may sound off-putting to some, there really isn’t much to worry about with how well it will install on a popular shotgun like your Mossberg 500. The TacStar Shotgun Barrel Shroud, we feel, was the easiest option to install, and it’s the only one that eliminates the need for an additional purchase on a spacer. It has a longer length, so the weight is more easily distributed across the barrel and makes it less likely to slide during recoil. The friction collar is an innovative design, and that $35 price tag should be very affordable to all buyers.
