The Marlin 336 rifle is one of the ultimate choices for a hunting rifle. It is iconic for deer and boar hunting, and it’s simple enough for any level of hunter to use.
The easy-to-understand features make picking out a scope for your Marlin 336 that much easier. A mid-range magnification or even a scout scope will do perfectly well atop your rifle. You may ask yourself, though, “what types of scope rings should I choose?”
We compiled a review of the best Marlin 336 scope mounts we could find, and we’ll let you know which we think is the best for this style of gun.
The majority of scope rings you’ll find are either going to be made of aluminum, steel, or a combination of both. Aluminum is more frequently seen, but that’s because it’s cheaper to manufacture and buy. In many cases, steel is usually the better bet to make for maintaining a zero on your scope and protecting it in general. For hunting rifles specifically, there’s an exception. Your Marlin 336 won’t exactly need a heavier set of rings, and aluminum will be acceptable. If you’re only using a basic 1-inch tube scope, either aluminum or steel rings can be very suitable for your needs.
Materials – These single scope mount rings for your Marlin 336 by Weaver are constructed of multiple materials. The base is made of a rugged aluminum, while the scope strap is made of steel. The rings can be purchased in either a matter black or silver finish. A stainless steel recoil beam is at the base of each ring, and they lock in place with a unique square cross lock bolt. There are two retention points – both on a single side of the strap. The main feature of these mounts is the large see through portion, allowing the shooter to use the original iron sights on their hunting rifle.
Performance – Weaver’s Marlin 336 scope base rings are fairly unique. Since the majority of the base is made of aluminum, the overall weight is still quite light. The steel strap offers a really solid grip on your scope, and the width will also protect your scope from some exterior damage as well. However, this setup makes the rings a little top heavy, so it’s crucial (if it wasn’t already before) to ensure you install the rings very securely in to place. The stainless steel beam will help maintain the balance, as well, though. The special see through spaces give more than enough view of your Marlin’s iron sights, so these will be a great choice for hunters.
What we say – The Weaver Detachable Rings are the best choice for hunters using their original sights and would like steel components without adding too much weight.
- Lowest cost in review
- Lightweight aluminum and rugged steel
- Large amount of see through space
- Can be top heavy
- Made of the highest quality materials
- Hunting scopes rings
- Another quality Bushnell product
Materials – The CCOP High Profile Rings are a single piece Marlin 336 Picatinny scope base. The construction is made of aircraft grade T6061 aluminum alloy in a matte, black finish. The base of the mount installs in place with two standard hex screws, but the entire piece offers a two inch forward extension for your 30mm or 1-inch tube rifle scope. The two scope rings have six points of retention per ring – three on each side. There is plenty of see through space under the rings and across the entire build. CCOP’s weapon accessories are all rigorously tested before being made available to purchase for durability and resistance to recoil.
Performance – There are a few reasons to love a single piece scope mount for rifles. The design ensures the weight of your scope is being distributed properly, even when there’s a forward extension on the rail. This Picatinny scope base also tends to have more points of retention per ring. In this case, six per ring is usually the maximum you’re going to see. Although it is not a quick detach mount, it’s easier to remove or re-attach your scope as one, solid unit, instead of handling two individual rings. This saves you time on the process itself as well as any re-zeroing. There are no steel components on this mount, so it’s technically not as durable as many others, but it is lightweight and convenient.
What we say – The CCOP High Profile Rifle Scope Mount is the best selection for shooters who require additional eye relief on their rail and want an overall lighter mount.
- Forward scope extension for eye relief
- Lightweight materials
- Six points of retention per ring
- No steel components
- Fits a 30 mm rifle scope
- High Profile
- T6061 aluminum alloy
Materials – The scope rings produced by Nikon are designed similar to a single piece construction mount, but they perform as individual mounts. The United States made rings are built from aluminum alloy in a matte, black finish. Both rings offer a forward extension; however, they can be reversed to accommodate single power scopes or scopes that already offer good eye relief. Each ring has a single strap, which is retained by two retention points – one on each side of the ring. The rings are low to medium profile, and both rings attach to your Picatinny rail by a single screw and leave plenty of room for other accessories.
Performance – This set of scope rings is probably one of the most unique bases for your Marlin 336 rifle that we’ve seen. They are similar to the CCOP option in style; but, being individual rings, they open up a new level of creativity and set up. These could work as your standard hunting scope mount or even as a Marlin 336 scout scope mount because the shooter can essentially install these in whichever position they’d like. You can add or decrease eye relief as needed. What we don’t like about the rings is that there’s only one point of retention on either side of the straps. This is the bare minimum, and this may or may not be an issue for some gunowners. That’s why we would suggest mounting scout scopes or single power scopes with the Nikon rings.
What we say – These scope mount rings by Nikon are the best choice for gunowners with lightweight scopes or who require some versatility with their eye relief.
- Ability to adjust eye relief in multiple ways
- Designed similarly to a single piece design
- Lightweight aluminum
- Only one retention point per side of each ring
- Allows Proper Height, Eye Relief and Forward Position for Charging-Handle Access on Virtually...
- Strong-Yet-Lightweight Alloy Construction
- For One Inch Tube Diameter Riflescopes, Fits flattop picatinny rails
Materials – Warne’s Marlin 336 scope mounts are single rings that attach to your Picatinny rail with quick detach levers. Despite being QD, they still feature Warne’s special square stainless steel recoil control key. The rings themselves are also made of a highly rugged steel in a matte, black finish. They uniquely secure your scope with two Torx style screws per ring at the top of the mounts. They’re low profile, offering only about a quarter inch of height. Warne guarantees the rings will maintain your scope’s zero, even after detaching and re-attaching the mount to your hunting rifle.
Performance – This is the only option within this review that’s made of an all steel construction. This is also the only quick detach option within the review. QD mounts are typically required for more tactical purposes, but Warne offers the no re-zeroing guarantee, which can be very useful on any rifle or for any type of shooter. Despite being a little heavier than most other mounts, these rings are an excellent choice for both 1-inch tube scopes or scout scopes. With the retention points at the top of the rings, their low profile makes a good combination for lever-action rifles. The stainless steel recoil control key ensures neither the mount nor the scope itself will budge.
What we say – The Warne Scope Mounts are the best choice for shooters requiring a quick detach option and have a lighter scope.
- All steel rings provide a lot of protection
- Steel recoil control key
- Guarantee no re-zeroing
- Heavier weight without aluminum
- Return to Zero Guaranteed, quickly detach and reattach the Maxima QD rings with no loss of...
- Square recoil control key for positive engagement of ring to base
- Indexable lever allows placement of the levers in any position desired
Our Favorite Marlin 336 Scope Mount
Our favorite option for this review was the High Profile Rifle Scope Mount Rings from CCOP. For a hunting rifle, we like the advantages of a single piece constructed base over two individual rings. CCOP is also a brand that rigorously tests its products, and it has been a consistently reliable brand for scope bases. The rings themselves offer the most retention out of any of the other rings that were listed here, and that makes up for the fact that there are no steel components in the product. The single piece construction also makes up for some of the recoil reduction in the mounting hardware. The forward extension is going to offer any additional eye relief your scope may not naturally provide you, and the high profile will allow you to continue using the original sights on your Marlin 336. You really can’t go wrong with this option, so we think everyone should consider the CCOP scope mount rings for their hunting rifle.
