Are you cleaning your firearms properly? You better be! If your weapon is all clean and free of debris, then it’s time to apply a good quality gun grease. The best gun greases should create a durable barrier to protect your gun from air born dirt, moisture, extreme weather conditions, and friction.
We’ve put together this review of our favorite gun greases on the market, and we’ll let you know which we think is the best option for the everyday gunowner. Surprisingly, while reading this review, it’s easy to see that many gun greases are designed for particular purposes. Some are best for rust prevention; some may be best for protection during long term storage, and some are best for lubricating the smaller pieces of your weapon’s interior. Depending on how often you use your weapons, and what conditions you use them under, will determine which gun grease is the smartest buy for you.
Materials – Birchwood Casey is a well-known and highly respected gun grease amongst shooters. This Universal grease is incredibly clean and highly viscous, so it is easy to apply to your most prized weapons and firearms. The Birchwood Casey Rig Universal grease provides quality protection from rust during long and short periods of storage, and every application attributes to building a barrier between your guns and any dust, dirt, or floating particles. One thorough application of thin gun grease will get the job done, and the application should last through multiple uses of your rifle, pistol, shotgun, or any other favorite weapons. Birchwood Casey Rig Universal Gun Grease can be purchased in a 1.5 ounce tube, a 3 ounce jar, or a 12 ounce tub.
Performance – Birchwood Casey offers highly applauded products, and finding anything to complain about is a little difficult with their universal gun grease. This grease is incredibly clean; and, while you still should be cautious whilst using it on your weapons, you can be confident knowing you are using a high quality product that won’t clog any pores or leave any debris behind. Ultimately, the packaging could be a little more helpful in maintaining any mess. Simple screw tops to all of the tubes and jars leave us wishing there was more control over how much grease can be used or wasted. We suggest wiping away any leftover grease from the lids or jars with a towel after each use. Otherwise, a buildup can leave gun grease everywhere.
What we say – The Birchwood Casey Rig Universal Gun Grease is the cheapest product offered within this review, with the 1.5 ounce tube costing only about five bucks online. The 3 ounce and 12 ounce containers cost about $10 and $15, respectively. Obviously, the best deal is one the 12 ounce option, so we hope you have a lot of firearms to grease!

Materials – Tetra Gun Grease is made of fluoropolymer white grease, which is highly penetrative to get into all of the nooks, crannies, and pores of your gun metal. The grease also bonds to the exterior of all of your guns and parts, leaving behind a thin film that isn’t messy and won’t let dust, dirt, or grime in. Applying this gun grease will reduce friction between pieces as well as rust and corrosion. The Tetra Gun Grease can withstand a wide range of temperatures, including extreme cold or intense heat. The grease’s odor is minimal and not offensive, and it won’t attract fouling. Simply apply a light coating to all of your weapon’s metal parts, and buff the pieces dry to create a debris repelling barrier. This firearms grease comes in a one ounce tube.
Performance – The Tetra Gun Grease is focused on enhancing the function of smaller pieces such as rifle bolts, sears, locking lugs, and semi-auto slide rails. It’s intended to keep rust from developing on areas inside your weapon, as well as to keep all of the inner workings of your weapons moving and gliding like new. The low odor is much appreciated, especially if you have a more confined space for maintaining the upkeep of your guns. The noticeably white fluoropolymer grease is helpful in seeing where grease has been applied and where it has been properly buffed. We do suggest purchasing this gun grease for the main use of preventing friction and corrosion, and perhaps invest in a different grease or lube for protecting your gun metal from moisture and debris. While this is an awesome product, there are better options for the latter purpose.
What we say – The Tetra Gun Grease is another relatively cheap option, with the one ounce tube costing between $10 and $15, depending on where you purchase it from. While there are larger options available, we suggests ticking to the one ounce tube, since it’s best for using on smaller parts as opposed to large surface areas.
- White grease great for keeping track
- Not messy, low odor
- Great for small inner pieces
- Not best for protecting from moisture and dirt
- Tetra Gun Grease original synthetic lubricant protectant
- Handles wide operating temperature range
- Fluoropolymer white grease
Materials – Ah, Hoppe’s No. 9! What would we do without Hoppe’s Gun Grease? This certainly would not be a grease review without this brand popping up somewhere within it. One of the most recognizable brands for gun protection and maintenance, Hoppe’s Gun Grease can lubricate, displace debris, and protect your weapons from exterior damage and dirt. If you don’t clean your firearms as often as you should, this gun grease can create a lasting and powerful barrier for long term storage little use. Apply a layer of Hoppe’s No. 9 grease to the bore or exterior of your weapons, thoroughly rub it in, and the grease will sink into the pores of the metal. This blocks any dust or moisture from attracting, or your gun will look like new when you do decide to take it out to play. This gun grease comes in a 1.75 ounce tube.
Performance – While many greases are mainly used for protecting the inner workings of your rifles, pistols, and other firearms, Hoppe’s No. 9 Gun Grease is initially intended to fill the pores and protect exterior parts during long term storage. A complete cult favorite, Hoppe’s No. 9 also has a highly trusted brand name, leaving all buyers confident in their purchase. Of course, you can still use Hoppe’s grease on any metal parts of your gun. If you only use your rifle for the family hunting trip, or you have a few prized pistols that you’d prefer most to admire from afar, then picking up a tube of this good stuff is one of the best steps you can take to protecting those prized possessions.
What we say – Hoppe’s No. 9 Gun Grease one ounce tube costs about $10 online. While that’s a little more expensive for the size, it’s still a relatively low cost in general. We may suggest looking into a larger sized package, since it’s intended to be used on more surface areas.
- Trusted brand name and gunowner favorite
- Good for protecting guns during storage
- Best for repelling moisture and dirt
- Thicker application not for everyone
- Lubricates moving parts

Materials – Mil-Comm TW25B Gun Grease is another fan favorite with an original formula that is proven to perform well in extreme temperatures and over a variety of weapon types. Although it is called a gun grease, this product is a PTFE-based synthetic lubricant. It has the approval of the United States Military and foreign militaries. Applying this gun grease / lubricant minimizes the accumulation of sand and dust, which can get into the smallest pores and space between gun parts. This grease will also provide one of the best corrosion protections for all firearm metals in all types of environments and weather conditions. The Mill-Comm TW25B Gun Grease comes in a re-sealable syringe or squeeze tube, and it is recommended for parts that experience a lot of wear, exposed areas, and for bore protection.
Performance – We love the synthetic grease in Mil-Comm’s TW25B product. If it’s good enough for the United States Military, as well as ally militaries, it should be good enough for the rest of us, right? While we’ve covered greases that are particularly best for certain areas on our firearms, Mil-Comm’s formula works fantastically on any type of gun and for both the exterior and interior parts. You can expect this product to be usable on guns that are fired under the hot summer sun or during freezing cold winter mornings on hunting day. We also prefer the style of packaging this gun grease comes in, which has a controlled squeeze tube. This way, you shouldn’t have a lot of build up in the cap or end up using too much and wasting the product.
What we say – The Mil-Comm TW25B Gun Grease 1.5 ounce tube costs about $17-$20 online, making it the most expensive option within this review. While the price is a little more up there, this is a brand and product you can really trust for all types of uses.
- Used for interior friction protection and exterior protection
- Withstands extreme temperatures
- Used by U.S. Military
- Most expensive option
- Original formula and a top selling firearms lubricant worldwide
- Exceptional performance in adverse conditions
- Choice of the U.S. Military and its Allies
Our Favorite Gun Grease
It went without saying (but we’ll say it anyways): our favorite item in this review is the Mil-Comm TW25B. Not only does it make a fantastic lubricant for the inner workings of your weapons, but it creates a protective barrier for any exterior metal parts as well. Despite having the highest price, it’s totally worth it to shell out the $20 for this tube of grease.
