Here at SWGGUN, our contributors are passionate about reviewing firearms, ammunition, optics, and accessories. We spend countless hours dedicated to research and writing, backed by professional experience in the field.
That being said, we are equally passionate about spreading awareness and sharing resources for gun safety.
This is why we fully support Project ChildSafe. As much as we want to share our love for gun culture, we also want to share the importance of being a responsible gun owner and properly teaching future gun owners on handling and storing firearms.
Project ChildSafe is an initiative developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. It’s a non-profit, charitable organization that receives donations and support from all corners of the United States.
In fact, it is the largest and most comprehensive education program on firearm safety in the country.
Starting in 1999, Project ChildSafe has partnered with over 15,000 law enforcement communities to deliver helpful information and free firearm safety kits. The vital resources Project ChildSafe has provided over the years have been a widely appreciated contribution to creating a more educated population on the potential dangers of gun use and the proper protocols to avoid life threatening situations.
The firearm safety kits distributed by Project ChildSafe are the foundation of the program. Each kit includes a cable-style gun lock and a brochure on the safe handling and storage of a gun. The kits are completely free to the public, and they’re available at hundreds of locations throughout the United States. To find out where you can request a firearm safety kit, go to projectchildsafe.org, and use their “Find a Safety Kit” feature to locate the nearest town that has them. Make sure to contact the location directly to request the kit before going in. If you don’t have a location near you that provides them, don’t hesitate to contact your local police department, and ask them to become involved with the movement. It is free for any law enforcement department to become a supporter of Project ChildSafe and to make firearm safety kits available to their town. Over 37 million firearm safety kits have been distributed throughout all 50 states and 5 U.S. territories, and that number is only growing.
How you can get involved?
First, you should check out their website and read their informative resources on current statistics and advice on practicing gun safety at home. That may seem like a lot of work, but most gun safety guidelines are pretty simple:
- Know how to operate your firearm. This includes safely opening and loading the weapon.
- Even when handling an unloaded gun, always point the gun in a safe direction away from others or yourself. Accidents happen all the time, and this is the best way to avoid accidental firing.
- Never assume a weapon is unloaded. Always check the chamber for ammunition or remove the magazine before opening the action.
- Only touch the trigger when you are ready to shoot. Even if you are handling an unloaded gun, your finger should be placed outside of the trigger guard.
- When a gun is not in use, it should be unloaded and locked away in a safe place.
If you’d like to contribute to the growing non-profit organization, then click the donate button on their website to offer monetary support. All donations made to Project ChildSafe are tax deductible to the extent of the law.
For every $2 donated, Project ChildSafe provides a gun lock to someone in need of one.
Other ways of showing support for Project ChildSafe includes liking their Facebook page and sharing their web page with other gun owners that you know. You may also consider becoming a law enforcement partner or a supporter organization.
The amount of firearm sales in the United States has been steadily increasing, but the number of accidental gun fatalities has been decreasing. We have projects such as Project ChildSafe to thank for that. Project ChildSafe is partnered with a similar initiative, called “Own It? Respect It. Secure It.” Also created by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, “Own It? Respect It. Secure It.” has been put in place as a platform for industry professionals and retailers to promote additional firearm use and storage safety and to encourage active support in gun safety education programs. Having a gun in your home can provide a sense of safety and stability, but it also comes with many responsibilities to avoid tragic mishaps with children or other family members. Accidents involving stolen or misused loaded weapons can be entirely preventable. Becoming involved with Project ChildSafe is a lifesaving choice that every current and future gun owner should make.
As active members of the gun community, we at SWGGUN are proud to stand by initiatives such as Project ChildSafe and “Own It? Respect It. Store It.”
We highly encourage all of our readers to request a firearm safety kit from their local police department and to help us in spreading the word on gun safety. We use our guns to protect our homes and loved ones, and we must also use our passion to prevent accidents and fatalities. Together, we can all create a united team of responsible and educated gun owners. Join us today in supporting this wonderful cause that is potentially saving lives every day!
